in a row kenny has seen his refrigerator sale business go cold. >> on the whole everything is down. i would say 40%. >> this year? >> yes. air conditioners 60%. >> reporter: but he's optimistic a new $300 million rebate program funded by the stimulus bill could heat up the appliance industry. it's a little like "cash for clunkers" but instead of trading in your old mustang you can replace your rusty maytag. the program is expected to kick off in late october. consumers who buy a new appliance, anything from a refrigerator to dishwasher to washing machine, even an air conditioner will get a rebate check when they buy an energy-efficient model. one that is energy star certified. rebates are expected to range anywhere from $50 to $200. each state will write its own specific rules about how much it will dole out, but unlike the "cash for clunkers" program you don't have to trade anything in. nationwide the appliance industry has seen sales drop

15% just this year. they are hoping the program will reel customers back into the stores the same way the "cash for clunkers" program did. we're hopeful it will work and bring traffic to the stores. help save energy, help consumers save money and start building the economy in our industry back up. >> reporter: critics wonder where will it end? first "cash for clunkers." now dollars for dishwashers. could funds for flat-screen tvs be just around the corner? kenny doesn't mind the jokes. he says the rebate program could save a year that might otherwise be a washout. sharon al fonzie, abc news, new york. al jackson is here from wegman's. we'll be right back. explain.

a grocery list with al jackson from wegman's. we've come a long way from brown-bagging it. >> a father of two and stepfather of four, it took a lot of planning to get lunches together just like back-to-school clothing, school supplies. what are we going to feed these kids everyday? >> assembly line. >> yes. we used to go through a lot of food. everybody got a sandwich, an apple and three cookies. they each had their name on
9:44 am
their bag and hope they didn't grab somebody else's because they didn't all get the same thing. we've come a long way. >> man, you had a wonder woman, i had a batman, adam west. not the new fangled stuff. >> the original. >> these are all lunch containers now? >> the mission now is to keep hot food hot and cold food cold for the kids. lunches vary from the time you make them at 6:00 in the morning or the night before. hopefully the night before, give them a chance to chill. i'll start with laptop lunches. this seems to be the most popular. it's in the shape of a laptop. also the same size of many of the books. it's insulated. gives you room for your drink. a nice case that i just happened to fill with a healthy lunch, we talked about eating a rainbow and having all the colors. there's a salad in here. >> salad. and look at that. >> for the kids. you got a nice peta sandwich
9:45 am
with chicken and sprouts. and you've got your vegetables, you got your fruit. this is fuel food. it's not filler food. there's a big difference. you want your kids to be awake in the afternoon and not be tired from some of the food that they would be getting from some of the menus in the cafeteria or what they are taking. >> laptop lunches. i like this blue one. >> it keeps your hot food hot. maybe for a little older child, with after school activities. you want to be able to keep food going. it's large enough for -- this is, we're into reusable. recyclable is ok. disposable not ok anymore. we want to make sure what we send our kids to school with they can use over and over again, bring back home. this is soup. you can attest. i did this in the morning at 6:00. >> the steam still coming. >> the kids can get something warm to eat. not just a cold packed lunch. again, in the same cooler that
9:46 am
you can have your water. these are just for little things. if you want to give your kids something there's a frozen piece that attaches to the top. and, again, keeps the food cold. you put this one in the freezer the night before. fill it. it's frozen. the whole thing goes in the freezer. put your drinks in, in the morning, it stays that way all day long. if you have a child in sports or marching band or after school activities and want something cold, instead of sending them to the vending machine for a buck and a half they can take waters or cans of pop. >> megan likes this. >> the sig bottles. ate swiss company, they've been around 100 years and they come in different sizes, different shapes. different colors. for boys, for girls, for adults. adults love these. it's, again, reusable, aluminum. so if there's isn't a problem with plastic.

if you don't know what to fix your kids, for 200 days a year when you're making lunch, 200 school days there, a book on lunch lessons. didn't think i needed it then. >> what did you learn? >> i learned there was a bunch of other food i could have fed my kids and didn't. just because it became a sandwich, it was an apple or orange and three cookies. >> al, thank you. >> you're welcome. >> he's the perishable manager ating at wegman's. >> thank you. >> you have a nice due date. >> i did not heartate tator tots once. say it. >> tater tots. i was out by loch raven reservoir. we're going to get rain to catch up. right now we're looking at a southwesterly flow pumping in more heat and humidity. frontal boundary to the

welcome back. we've talked about it since it started at midnight. senator ted kennedy, a force on health care, civil rights, war and peace died last night at his home in cape cod. >> to many of us best known as the last surviving brother of a storied political family. john hendrin looks back on his life.
9:55 am
>> reporter: to most americans ted kennedy was the staunch liberal with that famous last name. in reality he was a legislative work horse. in 1962 while brother john f. kennedy was in the white house ted was elected to jfk's vacant massachusetts senate seat. just 30 years old. most assumed that ted would one day take his rightful place in the oval office, the summer of 1969 that all changed. kennedy drove his car off a narrow bridge on chappaquidick island in massachusetts resulting in the death of campaign worker. and though he would declare in 1979 - >> today i formally announce that i'm a candidate for president of the united states. >> thank you very much. >> reporter: he could not overcome questions about chappaquidick or incumbent jimmy carter. in the 1980s kennedy emerged as a force in the senate fighting for such causes as national health insurance and tax reform. before and during the battle for iraq kennedy became one of the loudest anti-war voices in the senate. just like he did during

vietnam. in 2008 he was diagnosed with a brain tumor but kennedy would once again prove resilience. while still undergoing cancer treatment he traveled to denver and gave an impassioned speech at the democratic convention. >> the work begins anew! the hope rises again! and the dream lives on! [cheers] >> reporter: ted kennedy was heir to a glamorous political tradition, more than 45 years in office, one of the longest serving senators in united states history. kennedy died before achieving what he called the cause of my life, national health care reform. if that passes this year as president obama hopes it would be in no small part due to the liberal lion from massachusetts. abc news, washington. >> with 47 years of political service we are going to do our top five, the longest serving senators in u.s. history.

let's go to diane sawyer now in new york. >> the life of many dimensions of triumph and tragedy has died at the age of 77. >> we've been looking at scenes all morning long of hyannisport where the kennedy family comes together both in times of sorrow and of pleasure. and this morning obviously they are coming together to say goodbye to senator kennedy. friends. president obama got the word at around 2:00 a.m. last night and had a phone conversation with the senator's wife, vicki, at around 2:25. of course, this relationship not just a political relationship, but a close personal relationship. senator kennedy took president obama under his wing when he first came to the senate and as you said, had that pivotal endorsement at the key moment in the campaign that made a huge difference. >> here now, the president.
9:58 am
>> i wanted to say a few words this morning about the passing of an extraordinary leader, senator edward kennedy. over the past several years, i have had the honor to call teddy a colleague, a counselor and a friend. and even though we have known this day was coming for some time now, we awaited it with no small amount of dread. since teddy's diagnosis last year, we have seen the courage with which he battled his illness and while these months have no doubt been difficult for him, they have also let him hear from people in every corner of our nation and from around the world just how much he meant to all of us. his fight has given us the opportunity we were denied when his brothers john and robert were taken from us. the blessing of time to say thank you and good-bye. the outpouring of love, gratitude and fond memories to which we have all borne witness is a testament to the way this singular figure in american

history touched so many lives. his ideas and ideals are stamped on scores of laws and reflected in millions of lives, and seniors who know new dignity and families that know new opportunity, in children who know education's promise, and in all who can pursue their dream in an america that is more equal and more just, including myself. the kennedy name is synonymous with the democratic party. at times, ted was the target of partisan campaign attacks but in the united states senate, i can think of no one who engendered greater respect or affection for members of both sides of the aisle. his seriousness of purpose was perpetually matched by humility and good cheer. his ability to match others on the senate floor for the
